No cost things to do

60% of the energy we use in the home is used to heat it. We don’t like feeling cold, so what can we do, without spending any money?

Set your radiator controls

  • If you have thermostatic radiator valves, set them at 3, wait a day, and then adjust to 2 or 4 if you’re too hot or cold.   Don’t forget, you can always put on a jumper. Turn down to 1 in rooms you don't use.

Set your heating controls

  • If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time.

Insulate and draught-proof your house

There’s not much point heating your home if the heat flies out through the roof, walls, and cracks.

  • Insulate your loft and cavity walls. Energy suppliers such as British Gas sometimes do this free of charge.
  • Seal gaps and cracks in walls around windows and doors and where cables and pipework comes in.
