Winchester BID have asked the City Council to limit restaurant growth and protect the provision of a mix of independent businesses in Winchester in their response to the Local Plan Part 2.

Over the past couple of years a number of national restaurant chains have opened new outlets in Winchester adding nearly 900 covers. While the number of restaurants, cafes and bars in the High Street is limited by planning policy, no such limits exist in secondary shopping areas such as Jewry Street or the Square. The BID is concerned that further expansion of the hospitality trade could affect the eclectic mix of independent businesses in the town centre.
