The results from a new report suggest that toxic air pollution is a problem in far more places than the government has admitted.

Unmasked: the true story of the air you’re breathing’ summarises the pollution monitoring carried out by thousands of Friends of the Earth (FoE) supporters up and down the country. And the findings point towards the government underplaying the true extent of the issue.

The FoE say: "We must urgently tell Theresa May that she faces a huge public backlash if her government fails to address this scandal in its final Air Quality Plan next month. If she hears from thousands of us right now we think there’s a real chance of improving what is currently a weak and inadequate draft of the plan.

"People all over the country have been taking part in a ground-breaking citizen science experiment to monitor air quality where they live. Initial results point towards air pollution being much more widespread than the government’s own policy acknowledges.

"When Friends of the Earth supporters challenged the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to up his game on air pollution, he responded. But despite a few signs of progress in the nation’s capital, it’s clear that government plans to clean up the UK’s dirty air simply aren’t good enough. This new report adds even more weight to the overwhelming case for tough, meaningful action on air pollution.

"Together let’s make sure Theresa May hears that message loud and clear."
