Water

We all use water on a daily basis with little thought for its carbon footprint. Yet energy is required to treat and pump water to where it is used and also to treat it afterwards before it is returned to rivers and aquifers. Overall water use, excluding any energy used to heat the water, amounts to around 0.8% of the UK’s annual footprint.

A more important consideration is that some areas, such as the Southeast of England, are classed as ‘water stressed’. This means that the demand for water exceeds the available amount during a certain period or when poor water quality restricts its use. Typically, we each use around 150 litres every day. Climate change can be a major and increasing driver of water stress if rainfall decreases at certain times of the year.

Water can be saved by taking showers instead of baths, showering less frequently and flushing toilets less. A dual-flush arrangement can be retrofitted to a modern toilet cistern which uses as little as 6 litres for solid waste and only 3 litres for liquid waste.  So dual flush can almost halve the amount of water used in the toilet which will have a big impact on your water bills as well as paying for itself.
